As a type the Sesquicentennial half dollar, with its dished fields often comes with shallow, soft strikes and lack luster surfaces. It really is interesting to consider that despite a generous mintage of 141,120, relatively few survive in GEM grade, and NONE have graded in the SUPERB grades. WOW! This is the opposite of what a typical Sesqui looks like. An intense flashy semi-reflective luster is vivid and dazzles the viewer. LOT 213 $1 1776 CONTINENTAL, CURRENCY. PCGS MS63 CAC Ex Donald G. Partrick Collection as noted on the insert. This is an amazing, CHOICE MINT STATE example of this ever popular type, one of the nicest and most original we have ever seen in our decades of experience! This is one of those coin types that has always intrigued collectors of all experience levels as they flip through their Red Books. Warm, even pewter-dove patina graces the surfaces of this semi-reflective and sharply struck Continental Dollar. Exceptionally well struck, all the details are boldly rendered. Even with the aid of a strong glass, we are unable to locate any serious marks or ticks, issues that often plague these soft metal coins. The eye appeal is truly sensational! Struck from the Newman 2-C die pair, which is also listed as W-8455, Hodder 2-A.3, Breen-1092, is a Rarity-3 die marriage, but it needs to be noted that many of these are lower grade or have flaws that would preclude grading. This coin is so high end that Mr. Partrick’s envelope noted “if not, then--one of the Finest Known!!” Struck in a pewter alloy of 81% tin, 16% lead, 2% antimony, weighing 253.6 grains. This variety has the word CURRENCY spelled correctly, and does not have E.G. FECIT below the sundial. The motifs are taken from contemporary Continental Currency banknotes, issued by the Continental Congress and had designs inspired by Benjamin Franklin. The obverse design of the sun shining down on a sun dial, with the words FUGIO (I fly in Latin) and MIND YOUR BUSINESS, is a metaphor, interpreted as Time flies so take care of your priorities. The reverse has 13 interlocking chain links with the names of each of the 13 newly united states. AMERICAN CONGRESS and WE ARE ONE fill in the central device. Continental dollars as they are known come struck on three different planchet compositions, silver, brass, and pewter. The silver strikings are EXCESSIVELY RARE, with just 4-5 known in all grades. Brass examples are VERY RARE with perhaps a dozen known. Pewter specimens are represented by a few hundred or so in all grades and varieties. The traditional theory advanced for ages by Eric P. Newman was that these were struck in New York or Philadelphia to circulate alongside the Continental notes. However, modern research by David McCarthy and Erik Goldstein suggests that these were actually struck in Europe. Their theory is supported by the fact that no contemporary records exist of these coins being struck by authority of Congress, nor are there any surviving articles, letters, etc mentioning them in newspapers or correspondence of the era. Indeed the first published reference to Continental Currency coinage is from a 1783 German publication. Regardless of their actual origin, the Continental Dollar is long regarded as a classic piece of American numismatic history, and the inclusion of any example in any grade brings up the stature of any coin collection. Ex. Donald G. Partrick Collection, Heritage, January 2015, lot 5841; earlier ex.Ted L. Craige, private purchase, May 18, 1971. PCGS 7, NGC 3, CAC 4. LOT 214 NOVA CONSTELLATIO 1785 BLUNT RAYS. PCGS XF45 CAC Crosby 1-B, W-1880. CONSTELLATIO is misspelled CONSTELATIO on this variety, the only die pair used to strike the blunt rays type. An early Confederation era copper coin that is an always popular type. Rarely seen in a problem free state, the surfaces of this lightly circulated example are hard and free of corrosion, pitting, or any other kind of environmental damage that often plague these coppers. The all seeing eye motif on the obverse surrounded by sun rays and a circle of 13 stars make up a wonderful metaphor of God’s all seeing eye watching over this new nation (constellation) of 13 states. The patina is warm and even, the eye appeal is exceptional for an example of this type. PCGS 10, NGC 4, CAC 1. This coin last sold in November 2013 for $1,293 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $1,300. What a neat type coin, worthy of any colonial or pre-federal copper type set. PCGS# 810 | EST: $1,200+ LOT 215 FUGIO 1787 STATES UNITED, 4 CINQ. PCGS MS64 RB Newman 11-X, W-6790, a Rarity-4 die pairing. What a great example of this type in VERY CHOICE Mint State grade. According to the Whitman Encyclopedia on Colonial Coins, about 132 were a part of the famed Bank of New York Hoard in 1948. With its lustrous surfaces and ample original red in the protected areas and warm brown overtones this coin likely hails from that source. A well executed strike from a heavily clashed pair of dies, the rings from the reverse design boldly impressed along the periphery, especially on the right side. A die crack at the bottom of the reverse assists in the attribution of this variety. The lower portions of the design are slightly soft in strike which is common for the issue. The surfaces are hard and intact, free of any corrosion or planchet fissures that so often plague this series. This is a classic type, struck under authority of Congress in 1787. The design types, adapted from Revolution era Continental Currency paper currency were inspired by Benjamin Franklin. The obverse legends, FUGIO, MIND YOUR BUISNESS and the sundial in the center is interpreted to mean “time flies, so pay attention to your affairs.” The reverse shows 13 interlocking links, representing the union of the 13 states. PCGS 29, NGC 4. The most recent MS64 RB Fugio copper realized $5,520 in April 2018. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,000. LOT 216 FUGIO 1787 UNITED ABOVE STATES. PCGS MS64 BN CAC A VERY RARE Rarity-6 variety of the always popular Fugio copper series. The Newman 11-A, W-6780 variety is attributed by the UNITED over STATES on the reverse. Tied for FINEST example of this important variety in the Brown category at PCGS. Glossy lustrous, hard mahogany surfaces have a strong mint brilliance that really brings the sharply struck devices to life. The details are wonderfully crisp. There are some minor hints of planchet slag, caused by impurities in the metal on the reverse, but they are not overly distracting to the naked eye. Minor die clashing is seen on the reverse, in the rings. The likely cause of the rarity of this Newman variety is the bisecting die crack across the reverse from 2:00 to 8:00. There are no serious marks or post minting issues of any kind, even the slag, which is mint made is not corroded or has any signs of any environmental issues. The surfaces are hard and glossy. The eye appeal is SUPERB! This is a variety that usually only appears when important collections of colonial issues are sold. Prior auction appearances for Mint State examples include: PCGS MS66 RB . LOT 222 1/2C 1833 C-1. NGC PF66 RB CAC Ex. H.P. Smith and Donald G. Partrick Collections, as noted on the insert. This is a very interesting example of this very rare Proof half cent issue. Tied for FINEST graded by either service in the RB classification, this C-1 is struck from a very late die state, Breen State IV, Manley State 1.0. In the New Netherlands June 1967 catalog, this coin was described as one of the last Proofs struck, produced from severely clashed and cracked dies. Despite the late die state, the fields retain bold reflective surfaces. There is NO question it is a Proof. The color is a warm brick red mellowing to a soft brown with violet and pale blue patina on both sides. The sharply struck devices are quite lovely. LOT 254 1C 1955 DOUBLED DIE OBVERSE. PCGS MS64+ RD CAC What a sensational MS64+ RD example of this popular and important 20th century Doubled Die variety. An essential coin for the collector, a classic KEY date in the series. Approximately 20,000 examples were struck when a working die and working hub were struck together, creating the dramatic doubling at LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date. Many of the doubled dies were placed into the cellophane wrapping of cigarette packs in vending machines. At the time, a pack cost 23 cents, so vending machine operators would put the 2 cent change in the pack. Because of this, most survivors remain in Mint State grades, but ones with full, original RED coloration remain quite difficult to find! The present coin has distinct claims to an even loftier grade, no promises. Brilliant, glowing red lustrous surfaces glow vividly in the satiny smooth surfaces. LOT 312 H10C 1795 PCGS MS66 CAC A MAGNIFICENT jewel! Truly on the cusp of a full SUPERB GEM grade, the eye appeal on this early half dime is off the charts! There are not many times in your numismatic life when you can buy a 226 year old obsolete SUPERB GEM coin-period. This spectacular coin is one of the FINEST LM-9s that exist. While listed as Rarity-4, this is one of the more available of the 10 different 1795 die marriages, it is VERY RARE at this lofty state of preservation. The reverses is awash in a dazzling blue, with splashes of teal, violet, and coppery-orange. The obverse is razor sharp in the centers, weakening the definition at the dentils. The reverse has some minor adjustment marks that were not fully struck out, some areas are very sharp, while again, others are more blunt in definition. The obverse is shattered with multiple die cracks, clashes, and other characteristics that add much to the charm of this GEM. PCGS 9, NGC 7, CAC 6.
