LOT 568 $5 1860 J-272. PCGS PR65 BN CAC This is an impressive GEM example of this very popular Rarity-6 (21-30 minted) pattern half eagle. A capped head of Liberty with three stars above the forehead, a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY flows down around her neck. Reverse shows a perched eagle. Both sides were designed by Longarce. Struck on a broad copper planchet. Exceptional, richly mirrored copper fields blaze with a strong reflection that has iridescent accents of teal-blue, coppery-gold, and lilac-purple. Sharply struck on both sides, this highly original and beautiful GEM offers a high-end, wonderful look. The idea tried on these patterns was to make a wider, but thinner planchet to avoid removing gold from the centers of the regular, thicker planchets and filling the void with lead or some other metal and pocketing the profit. PCGS 2, NGC 1, CAC 2. This GEM is from our July 2018 Regency Auction, sold for $9,988 as part of the Steven Cook Collection. The current Collectors Universe value is $12,000. Since 2018, the market for GEM patterns has picked up with the recent sales of selections from the Bob Simpson Collection. For reference, the Simpson coin was a non-CAC PR63 BN that sold for $7,200 in the 2021 FUN auction. It would not be a surprise if this GEM sold for more this time around. A Rarity-3 pattern, making it a great introductory level issue for those looking to “dip a toe” into the exciting world of pattern collecting. Brilliant, watery mirrors belie some wonderful golden-brown and lilac, rose, and violet accents. The strike is bold and the surfaces are devoid of any serious contact, lines, or flecks. The eye appeal is wonderful. PCGS 11, NGC 11. The most recent PCGS-graded examples sold in 2016, realizing $1,540 and $1,763. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $2,000. This variety pairs a regular Proof 1863 obverse die and a post 1866 with Motto-reverse die. These were struck for collectors in the late 1860s and early 1870s and were sold in off-metal sets. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Bold, flashy mirrors are a delight to behold. Mahogany brown with iridescent blue and rose tones. A few light marks, from a gentle mishandling can be found with a strong glass and account for the assigned grade. Sharply struck. This is a wonderful looking coin for the grade, we think it will see very spirited bidding when it crosses the block. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. The PCGS Price Guide value of $8,250 is all that is listed for this grade, as no PR63 BN ever sold in auction. The non-CAC PR64 BN in the Simpson Collection, brought $7,800 in the recent ANA auction. This is the SINGLE FINEST example of exactly 7 that have been certified by PCGS and NGC combined. Deep, ultra reflective mirrors beam boldly all over and are in a stunning state of preservation, devoid of any issues. The details are bold and fully struck from an exacting blow from the dies. The fields are more lustrous than reflective with a bold cartwheel swirl. Iridescent overtones are amplified over the reddish-brown bronze colored surfaces, similar to that of medals struck at the Philadelphia mint in that era. The surfaces are essentially FLAWLESS, this SUPERB GEM has an amazing visual allure! PCGS 1, NGC 1, CAC 1. We suspect this coin is represented at both PCGS and NGC. Sold as part of the Simpson Collection in February 2021 for $14,400. The current Collectors Universe value is $16,000. With NONE FINER, this SUPERB GEM is worthy of a world class cabinet. Good luck!
