Indeed, we believe this coin to be more beautiful than the Sunnywood-Simpson coin that we have had the honor of selling before--that speaks VOLUMES to the quality and eye appeal! The 1892-CC is a date that is VERY RARELY seen with color and this one is a MONSTER for the date! This is a STUNNING example! Offering a bold, crisp strike with essentially full details (you can ignore the hint of softness on Liberty’s hair curl above her ear. The dies had clashed and cracked when this borderline SUPERB GEM was struck. Exceptionally lustrous surfaces have a bold cartwheel flash with some semi-Prooflike brilliance on the reverse. The obverse is awash in a swirling melange of blues, golds, oranges, and violets in varied hues, while some subtle hints of the original silver peaks through when rotated in a light. The reverse is essentially untoned, save for some toning by ONE DOLL on the lower reverse. For the date, (which does not come with such dramatic color) we rate the toning a 10 out of 10! Were it not for a tiny tick on the reverse, this coin would have possibly graded even higher, but the eye appeal is unaffected and the quality is amazing. PCGS 45, NGC 16, CAC 12. There are just five graded MS66+ at PCGS. The most recent example to sell in auction brought $42,300 in our October 2019 Exclusively Legend event. That coin had an extensive pedigree including Bill Spears’ Greatest CC Set of All Time; PCGS Tour Set; the NFL Set; Michael Casper Collection; Arno Collection; Sunnywood Collection; Simpson Collection; the CC Collection That Should Not Exist. This coin’s earlier pedigree is unknown but was sold as part of the Ralph and Lois Stone Collection, which hammered at $40,000 in May 2018. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $50,000 and it doubles to $100,000 in MS67. It sure looks like it has not been handled much at all the last 121 years! We rank it SUPER HIGH END. Even in GEM grades, the luster is usually muted and the surfaces are toned in a dullish gray, silver hue. This magnificent Premium GEM is the exact opposite of what you normally see graded MS66. Ultra satiny mint luster blooms all over the smooth surfaces. We cannot stress enough the cleanliness of this coin. LOT 508 $50 1915-S PAN-PAC. OCTAGONAL. PCGS MS65 CAC The 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 slug is an American numismatic classic, one of the greatest designs ever struck by the United States mint. With the heft of nearly 2.5 ounces of gold, you really cannot help but have a true sense of WONDER when holding one of these rarities. Of the original authorized mintage of 1,500 coins just 645 survived the melting pot. Its status as one of the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins in the book by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth make this a truly important and desired type coin. Featuring a classical themed design, the obverse shows the helmeted head of Minvera, the goddess of wisdom and her owl on the reverse. Dolphins are fitted into the angles, representing the wedding of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Panama Canal opening, which the Panama Pacific Expo honored, was one of the feats of human ingenuity and greatly expanded global trade. The $50 designs, in round and octagonal formats hearkened back to the territorial issues of Wass-Molitor and Augustus Humbert. This GEM Octagonal slug glistens with a glossy, satin mint luster that is bright and brilliant. Every detail is exceptionally well struck. For an early half eagle, this 1823 is of exceptional quality, originality, and visual appeal. We consider this coin to be closer to MS64 quality than MS63. Truly a special example of this very difficult type. For the date, this wonderful early “Fat Head” five sits in the condition census for the date with fewer than a dozen graded in MS63+ or finer grades. Of the 27,612 struck, fewer than 100 are thought to survive today (PCGS CoinFacts suggests 80 in all grades, with just two in Mint State). David Akers wrote in his opus on gold coins, “I do not know of a specimen that would grade better than EF.” Many known have issues that would preclude numeric grading, so this generally pleasing AU53 is a rare prize indeed. There is a hint of luster clinging to the fields surrounding the devices. Typical for the issue the design elements have some weakness, especially on the mint mark. Scattered contact is seen, though evenly distributed on both sides, none of these are singularly distracting. The color is pleasing. This is a rare date and a great collector grade piece. LOT 541 $10 1803 BD-5, EXTRA STAR IN CLOUD. PCGS AU58 CAC Wonderfully original and very pleasing for the grade. Beautifully toned surfaces show off varied golden, orange, and reddish hues that outline the devices in the fields. The actual wear is barely perceptible on the highest points and appears as gentle friction on the devices and in the fields. A few ancient scattered ticks can be found with a strong glass and a few mint made adjustment marks can be seen. The reverse has a die crack from the rim at about 6:00 through the tail and up around the right side of the shield. The colorful, rich golden-orange-red tones make this an incredibly gorgeous looking early eagle. This is an early gold specialists’ type of coin! It is a VERY SCARCE die marriage, listed in Bass-Dannreuther reference as Rarity-4+ with an estimated 90-110 known in all grades. In an earlier die state, the extra reverse star is visible boldly on the last cloud, under the F of OF. This coin, struck from a later die state, shows only vestiges of the star, and you do need a strong glass to see it. It is said that Harry Bass was the first to describe the star in the cloud feature on an example he purchased in 1966. It is curious because the star punched on the cloud is a smaller size than those used on gold eagle dies. BD-5 is also the only collectible die pair for the Large Reverse Stars variety, with the BD-6 being a Rarity-7 die pair with about 6-10 known. PCGS 8, NGC 1, CAC 1. No PCGS/CAC-graded piece has sold since November 2013. The current CAC CPG value is listed at $48,300. VERY RARE in any Mint State grade, this is a very high end AU58 with a very rare look.
