The treaty had guaranteed ownership of the BlackHills to the Lakota people, and disputes over the Hills are ongoing, having reached theUnited States Supreme Court on several occasions. However, in 1874, Colonel GeorgeArmstrong Custer led an expedition into the Hills and announced the discovery of gold onFrench Creek near present-day Custer, South Dakota. Custer's announcement triggered theBlack Hills Gold Rush and gave rise to the lawless town of Deadwood, which quicklyreached a population of around 5,000.In early 1876, frontiersman Charlie Utter and his brother Steve led a wagon train toDeadwood containing what were deemed to be needed commodities to bolster business.The wagon train brought gamblers and prostitutes, resulting in the establishment ofprofitable ventures. Demand for women was high, and the business of prostitution provedto have a good market. Madam Dora DuFran would eventually become the most profitablebrothel owner in Deadwood, closely followed by Madam Mollie Johnson. The saloon was destroyed by a fire and rebuiltin 1879. It burned down again in 1899, causing Swearengen to leave the town.The town attained notoriety for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok, and Mount MoriahCemetery remains the final resting place of Hickok and Calamity Jane, as well as slightlyless notable figures such as Seth Bullock. On December 13, 1959, the ABC/Warner Brothers western television series Colt.45 aired the episode \"Calamity\", a dramatization of the event. Dody Heath was cast asCalamity Jane and Joan Taylor as a woman doctor, Ellen McGraw. In the story line, seriescharacter Christopher Colt, played by Wayde Preston, hires Calamity Jane to drive thestagecoach containing Dr. McGraw and the vaccine needed to fight the epidemic. Colt is atfirst unsure if Calamity can handle the job because miners and Indians seek to steal thevaluable medication.[8]In 1876, General George Crook pursued the Sioux Indians from the Battle of Little BigHorn on an expedition that ended in Deadwood and is known as the Horsemeat March. TheHomestake Mine in nearby Lead was established in 1877. For years, it was the longestcontinuously operating gold mine in the United States. It is now open to tourists.On September 26, 1879, a fire devastated Deadwood, destroyed more than three hundredbuildings, and consumed the belongings of many inhabitants. Many of the newly 355

Miller and his associates in 1888, in order to serve their mining interests inthe Black Hills. The railroad was purchased by the Chicago, Burlington and QuincyRailroad in 1893. A portion of the railroad between Deadwood and Lead was electrified in1902 for operation as an interurban passenger system, which operated until 1924. Therailroad was abandoned in 1930, apart from a portion from Kirk to Fantail Junction, whichwas converted to standard gauge. Their population peaked at 250.[14]A few engaged in mining; most worked in service enterprises. A quarter arose on MainStreet, encouraged by the lack of restrictions on foreign property ownership in DakotaTerritory and a relatively high level of tolerance. Wong Fee Lee arrived in Deadwood in1876 and became a leading merchant. Birds including the turkey vulture, bald eagle, hawk, andmeadowlark fly around Mount Rushmore, occasionally making nesting spots in the ledgesof the mountain. Smaller birds, including songbirds, nuthatches, and woodpeckers, inhabitthe surrounding pine forests. Terrestrial mammals include the mouse, chipmunk, squirrel,skunk, porcupine, raccoon, beaver, badger, coyote, bighorn sheep, and bobcat. In addition,several species of frogs and snakes inhabit the region. The Grizzly Bear brook and StarlingBasin brook, the two streams in the memorial, support fish such as the longnose dace andthe brook trout.[29] Mountain goats are not indigenous to the area but can also be foundhere. They are descended from goats which were a gift from Canada to Custer State Park in1924 but later escaped.[30]At lower elevations, coniferous trees, mainly the Ponderosa pine, surround most of themonument, providing shade from the sun. Other trees include the bur oak, the Black Hillsspruce, and the cottonwood. Nine species of shrubs grow near Mount Rushmore. There isalso a wide variety of wildflowers, including especially the snapdragon, sunflower, andviolet. Towards higher elevations, plant life becomes sparser.[30] However, onlyapproximately five percent of the plant species found in the Black Hills are indigenous tothe region.[31]The area receives about 18 inches (460 mm) of precipitation on average per year, enough tosupport abundant animal and plant life. Trees and other plants help to control surfacerunoff. Dikes, seeps, and springs help to dam up water that is flowing downhill, providingwatering spots for animals. In addition, stones like sandstone and limestone help to holdgroundwater, creating aquifers.[32]Through the study of tree rings, it has been determined that forest fires have occurred in thePonderosa forests surrounding Mount Rushmore around every 27 years based on evidenceof fire scars found within tree core samples. Large conflagrations are not common. Borglum selectedMount Rushmore as the site for several reasons. The rock of the mountain is composed ofsmooth, fine-grained granite.
