248 X. DIESEL LOCO SHED, ERODE 1. History Of The Shed Diesel Loco Shed, Erode was started in February, 1966 with 2 supervisors and few technicians as a satellite shed for Diesel Loco Shed, Gooty. It emerged as an independent Shed on 18.05.1966. The Shed was initially planned to accommodate 40 locos, commissioned with a modest holding of 17 WDM2 Locomotives and became the first built Broad Gauge Diesel Loco Shed in South India established for maintenance of Broad Gauge Diesel Locos. A kind of unparalleled record was established by Diesel Loco Shed, Erode when the locos based in this Shed went all the way to Delhi and returned without any enroute detention, working Superfast Trains. It was originally planned to home 40 locos, and extended to 80 locos during 1971. Subsequently holding was enhanced to 100 locos in 1979. Extension of heavy repair bay was done in 1981 to enable maintenance of this holding and augmentation work for holding 50 additional HHP locos at the estimated cost of 22.4 crore has been completed in March 2019. This Shed has bagged the Shield at Railway Board level for “Best Maintenance” consecutively five times since the inception of the shield from 1973 to 1977 and subsequently the Shield was discontinued. The Shield is still available with the Shed. The role of this Shed in ironing out the teething problems faced in WDM2C (redesignated as WDM3A) locos when uprated from WDM2 locos, WDG3A locos during introduction and WDM3D locos with the uprate benefits of WDM3A& WDG3A locos are highly remarkable. This shed had taken a lot of effort in tuning up these locos to the road conditions by bridging the gap between the production and
249 maintenance aspects through the in-house modifications and improvements.Traditionally this Shed has been a practical school for the diesel fraternity as Officers, Supervisors and Staff from all over the Diesel Sheds used to visit the Shed to learn the maintenance practices being followed by the Shed. Consequent to introduction of uni-traction, this shed started maintaining AC locomotives also from March 2018. Initially, 05 AC locomotives to type WAG7 were inducted by the shed. Gradually the basic requirement such as Infrastructure for AC loco maintenance, training of staff and material requirement was established. Presently, 91 AC locomotives are maintained by this shed and 31 Diesel Locos are under operational. 2.
