DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGYThe Department of Psychology, attached to the Faculty of Humanities and Education, comes with the ur-gency of preparing the first counselors in lyceums. From this department emerged the first organized groupof psychological services to students in colleges and high schools.UNPHU Department of Psychology was organized in October 1967 on the initiative of Professor MalaquíasGil, whose first director was José Cruz, in Psychometrics, and since 1968 the degrees in School Psychol-ogy, Clinical Psychology and Industrial Psychology.VisionThe national and international acknowledgment in the academic community as a Program with high stan-dards of Academic Quality and excellent level, distinguished by its quality of training of remarkable psychol-ogists, using current teaching models that encourage students in the consolidation of knowledge, thoughtand action processes.General Objectives• Develop psychology professionals in clinical, educational and organizational areas able to assess, diag-nose and modify human behavior through the application of techniques in different environments: clinical,industrial and school;• To promote and develop educational and human development activities designed to project the best im-age of the School of Psychology;• Improve the academic quality of the plans of study in the psychology career in their various specialties.Our purpose is to manage activities which promote understanding of people as bio psychosocial entities tocontribute to society through training in the intervention phases of Basic School and Middle School of thecare, work and school settings.Our curriculum has a term of four years (12 periods), over three years of theoretical and practical classes,with the final year devoted exclusively to supervised practice shifts in clinics, community centers, non-governmental institutions and private and public companies. These years are composed of two years ofPsychometrics Technician and Psychology Research, plus two years devoted to the specialty area.Upon completion of the curriculum in any of the specialties of psychology the graduate of our School of Psy-chology will be able to solve any situation that comes your way, because he or she is trained and qualifiedof analytical and abstract thinking, observation, ease of persuasive verbal expression, emotional balanceand the good sense to make the best decision with his/her patient, student or business. DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCESThis fourth level program has among its purposes as follows:Study different schools of political thought throughout history, pointing to new paradigms that emphasizethe understanding of human development.Analyze the processes of democratization, governance and political dynamics of the Century XXI.These study plans are increased and implemented at European and American universities, especially fromthe termination of the Second World War.In our country the studies political sciences born in 1970 at the State University with a Bachelor’s andMaster’s level in UNPHU since 1979. Subsequently, other higher education institutions initiate similarprograms from Diploma up to Doctorates, linked with foreign universities.Make more efficient the Public Actions and Policies on the sectors benefiting from them.Provide the attendants of the theoretical and methodological tools to enable to analyze the political processand actively participate in them.Improve the Dominican Political Culture seeking the national debate regarding the social political problems.Grant participants a strong case to strengthen their convictions, principles and ethical values.Aimed to professionals with college degrees awarded by recognized universities by the Ministry of HigherEducation, Science and Technology (MESCyT) in the careers of Law, Political Science, Sociology,Economics and other areas near Humanities and Social Sciences, preferably not excluding other degrees.Those graduates of master’s degree in Political Science will be in better conditions to make a politicalor technical career in government institutions, electoral structures and similar bodies. In addition, thegraduates of the program have strengthened their ability to function in the Department of Communicationand Political Analysis.The Master is structured in two cycles. A basic three-quarter long with 22 credits, and specialization of threesemesters, a total of 23 political science credits, plus 6 credits of thesis, the total course load is 51 credits. SCHOOL OF MEDICINEThe School of Medicine of UNPHU was founded on 1966, being the first Private School of Medicine createdin Dominican Republic. The first group of doctors was graduated on year 1973.Our 1,263 graduated are Doctors with great trajectory and prestige, performing their profession in DominicanRepublic, United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Spain, and many other countries.The Program of Medicine is composed by 16 terms that can be completed in 5 yearsand 4 months, because the students can perform three terms per year of 15 weeks each one. Beforeentering to the program of the School of Medicine most of our international students already terminatedtheir pre medical studies in their countries of precedence. The Dominican students regularly do their Premedical studies in our institution.The Medicine career is divided into four cycles: 4 terms of Pre Medical, 5 terms of Pre clinical cycle (BasicSciences), 4 terms of Clinical cycle (Pre internship) and 3 terms of Clinic cycle (internship).Pre Medical: is targeted to provide a general academic education simultaneous to students of the careersof the Faculty of Health Sciences (Medicine, Odontology and Pharmacy). In this cycle the students acquirethe essential knowledge of the following areas: Social, Public Health, Methodology of Investigation, Letters,Biological Sciences, Math, Physical Chemistry Sciences and Humanities (Bioethics) among others; will alsoreceive College orientation, and Physical Education or Art Activities. Pre clinical Cycle (Basic Sciences): the student is devoted mainly to the study of normal structures andtheir functions, in addition to the study of Parasitology and Public health (divided into Epidemiology andSanitary Management and Legislation). In addition by mean of the study of Pathologies and Pharmacologythe student is introduced into the analysis of the conditions that interfere with the normal functions of theman and the changes that occur in the body as a response of those conditions. Dynamic and functionalaspects of the disease process are emphasized.The main object of this term is to try that the student be aware of the existent relation between this knowledgeand the clinical medicine.Clinical Sciences (Pre internship): composed by four semesters (12th to 15th).12th and 13th semesters are 15 weeks long each one for a total of 30 week of theory classes. 14th semesterhas a 12 weeks long term and 15th semester 22 weeks long term for a total of 34 weeks of hospital practice.This cycle place the students facing the knowledge of the Medical Pathology, Surgical and Pediatrics, aswell as Gynecology and Obstetrics and helps them to apply such knowledge to understand the man andthe disease, diagnosis and treatment. For this a great part of this term is used in works with the patient inhospital rooms, with the purpose to obtain such ability. Also studies of Psychiatry preparing the student totreat the psychiatric patient and its diseases.Clinical Sciences (Internship) composed by three semesters (16th to 18th) with a term of one year calendar,under the dispositions of the Sanitary Law. This year is devoted specially to the practice application in theHospital, the knowledge, techniques and experiences obtained in the classroom, labs and clinical facilities.The handling of the patient is emphasized.Hospital practices are performed in different hospitals in the city of Santo Domingo: hospital Dr. SalvadorB. Gautier, Hospital Dr. Luis E. Aybar, Children’s Hospital Dr. Robert Reid Cabral, Maternity Hospital deNuestra Señora de la Altagracia, Oncologic Institute Dr. Heriberto Pieter, Psychiatric Padre Billini Hospitaland Materno Infantil Plaza de la Salud Hospital and its centers of Geriatrics and Traumatology.First class students are able to perform 6 months of practice of the last year of the career in foreignerhospitals. Currently they do their practices in Miami, Puerto Rico and Sevilla, among others.The students receive a complete medical education; they are exposed to a great variety of experiences inthe hospitals that prepares them to stand out in their programs of residence. SCHOOL OF ODONTOLOGYThe School of Odontology of UNPHU started on 1966 as the first private school in Dominican Republic,with the name of dental school and graduated 5 founder students with the title of Doctors in Dental Surgeryon 1972, with teaching programs adequate to scientific experiences and the most advanced teachingtechniques of the moment supported by the different faculties of the institution.In 1983 a review was performed and on November 1985 the Academic Board changed the name of thedental school for the odontology school and the titles granted from that decree are Doctor in Odontology.Our school is featured for having the most amounts of academic credits and requirements in attention topatients, than in any other in our country; what can be translated in a great experience of our students inthe different areas of odontology.The career of odontology have 14 semesters divided into three cycles: a first Basic cycle, common withhealth sciences, from first to fourth semester. First Cycle (Basic): is targeted to provide general academic information and simultaneous to students in thisfirst cycle, they will study the essential knowledge in the following areas: Social, Public Health, Methodologyof Investigation, Letters, Biological Sciences, Math, Physic-Chemistry Sciences and Humanities (Bioethics),among others. They will also receive College Orientation, Physical Education or Arts Activities.Second Cycle (Pre clinical): For the first time the student will be in contact with materials related to theodontological practice and with the use of dummies over which will be developing appropriated techniques,abilities and skills for the future odontological treatment in patients.Third Cycle (Clinic): This stage is where the student receives the odontological preparation necessaryto prevent, diagnose and treat oral dental diseases; acknowledge their limits in the attention to patients,as well as its duty to refer them to the correspondent specialist, so they can obtain the appropriate healthassistance.Outside Work or Communitarian Assistance: one of the programs most developed by our clinic are theoutside works, where our students goes to health centers outside our campus to provide odontologicalattention in low income communitarian zones. This work is performed in the following locations • Oncology Hospital Dr. Heriberto Pieter. The student is in contact with different oral pathologies. • Juan Pablo Pina Hospital. The student is in contact with oral trauma. • Life and Hope Foundation.
