RE ENTRYAdmittance of students will be submitted to the following rules:The student who fulfill all academic requirements, but voluntarily interrupted his/her studies should requesta new entry. The new entry should be requested to the Director of the Office of Registration and will be decided in ac-cordance with the merits of the student and with the possibilities of availability offered by the academic unit, previous consult of the Director of the correspondent area. The Registration Office will notify the student ofthe result obtained by his/her request.Students out of the University for more than Five (5) years with no attendance to higher education lost allacademic rights formerly accumulated. They can re enter to the same career taking a new admission test, therefore the former academic records remains invalidated. They will be assigned a new enrollment num-ber.POLICY OF SATISFACTORY PROGRESSThis policy applies to students who receive federal financial assistance. The Federal law regulating the use of funds allocated to the various financial aid programs, requires alleligible student who meets the satisfactory academic progress standards established by the institution, inaddition to the academic regulations in force. The purpose of the Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards is to ensure that students who benefit fromthe aid make good use of them, continually demonstrating they are performing a steady and progressiveeffort to complete the requirements of their curriculum. To do this, students must meet certain criteria of academic achievement, both qualitative and quantitative,to be eligible to receive financial aid benefits. At the end of each academic year, the University will evaluate students to determine if they have met thesecriteria. Students who do not comply with at least one of these criteria are classified on probation duringthe subsequent academic year, but may continue participating in programs of financial assistance. If after ayear of probation still has not met academic eligibility criteria, it determines that it does not have satisfactoryprogress and therefore can not continue to receive federal financial assistance.Definitions:Academic year: The academic year at UNPHU has 2 consecutive academic semesters.Academic Load: refers to the amount of credits attended by the student.Full time student: Student with 12 credits or more during one academic semester. (UNPHU) Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña 51
Criteria of EvaluationThe evaluation is composed of two criteria:QUALITATIVE CRITERIAIt requires that the student reach an accumulated grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. If the retention rateof the academic program in which is enrolled is greater than 2.0, the student must meet that higher rate tohave academic progress for financial aid purposes.Students who earn accumulative GPA of 1.5 to 1.99 will automatically fall on probation, but may continueto participate in economic assistance programs for the following year. Students earning a GPA less than1.5, will not achieve satisfactory academic progress and lose the right to participate in federal financial aidprograms.QUANTITATIVE CRITERIAThere are two aspects of the quantitative element. The first measures the maximum period of time to be awarded federal financial aid to the student in accor-dance with the requirements of Financial Assistance Programs Title IV of the Department of Education. Thesecond determines the gradual progress towards obtaining the degree, through the adoption of a minimumpercentage of credits each academic year.Students may attempt up to 150% of the total credits required by their academic program. It requires the student to pass at least 66% of the credits attempted during the academic year for evaluation.Even if the student has not received financial assistance in the past, attempted courses will count againstthe maximum of 150%.Students of Pre medicalUNPHU students must complete premed cycle at a maximum of 150% of planned schedule. If after this time150% are not enrolled in graduate level (pre clinical cycle) then they cannot receive financial assistanceto complete the premed. Once entering to the graduate level could then be eligible to receive financial aidagain.NOTE: A premed student with 11 or fewer credits remaining to complete premed may take courses forgraduate level (pre clinical cycle) as long as the academic regulations and requiring prerequisites allowsdoing so.Transfer and Career ChangesStudents transferred from other institutions of higher education or who wish to change career will have thepending subjects to attend considered the for the establishment of the maximum term of their studies, inaccordance with the plan of selection of subjects drafted by the Department of Registration. Those studentswill also comply with all regulations applying to their level of studies.(UNPHU)Universidad NacionalPedro Henríquez Ureña 52
Application of the Policy of Satisfactory ProgressIf the student does not meet at least one of these criteria will then be placed on probation for the next aca-demic year. While on probation may continue to receive federal financial assistance. At the end of the year on probation will be evaluated again, if does not fulfill any of the above criteria, then itis considered unsatisfactory progress and therefore IS NOTELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. If,however, the student meets all the criteria, then the student is considered again with satisfactory progressand may participate in federal financial assistance program.Additional precisionsIncomplete- courses by which the student receives a grade of incomplete will be registered as attempted.Repeated Courses- A student will be able to receive economic assistance for repeated courses wheneverthe limit of 150% is not exceeded.Attempted Credits- All credits selected for a specific semester including the withdraw credits.Reviews and AppealsA student has the right to request review or appeal the probation decision or lack of Satisfactory Progressif understands that there is any mistake in his/her evaluation or if suffer any critical situation affecting itsacademic evolution. Among these causes we can note but not limited to: disease of a close relative, deathof a close relative among others. The student will be able to submit documents supporting his/her situation. The request of review or appealing should be delivered in the Register Department. If the decision of theCommittee of Academic Progress is not favorable it should submit a second appealing before the AcademicVice Rectory.REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATIONTo qualify as a candidate at technical or for a grade level the student should fulfill with the followingrequirements: • Approved with a GPA of 2.00 the courses described in the program • Applicants for graduation who started their studies in another institution should approve in our University at least 51% of the credits. In the event that the applicant didn’t approve less than 51% of the credits the Director of the school will determine which professional credits should be repeated in UNPHU and approved by the applicant to be able to opt for graduation. In the event of the Career of Medicine the student should attend and approve in our University at least the last four years of the career • Submit the Work grade or its equivalent • Comply with the pecuniary requirements of the University • Officially draft the correspondent request of award of grade to the Register’s Office in the term of (UNPHU) Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña 53
one (1) month from the beginning of the semester to complete their academic requirements. • Being formally introduced for the grade by the Director of the School or correspondent Department, after the fulfillment with all academic requirements. • Pay the right of grade • Attend to the ceremony of graduationStudents with a GPA from 3.00 to 3.3 will receive their graduation “CUM LAUDE” those who reach 3.4 to3.7 inclusive “MAGNA CUM LAUDE” and those with 3.8 to 4.00 inclusive “SUMA CUM LAUDE”. Will nothave the right to academic honors those students with obtained grades of “F” of “FI” during their studies. The University will regularly celebrate graduation ceremonies twice a year: on April 21st, anniversary ofthe foundation of the University and November 19 anniversary of the first classes. Applicants with theright of graduation will receive, if requested, a certification of term of studies in any given time before thecelebration of the graduation; exceptionally, when new justified reasons, an extraordinary graduation couldbe held on the dates appointed by the Chancellor, at request of the interested in the Register’s Office.APPLICABILITY OF PLAN OF STUDYThe plan of study represents the program of teaching of a career based on the system hour credit. “Onecredit is equivalent to one hour of classes of theory or two or three of laboratory or practice, per week , pergiven semester”(Regulation of Exams, tests, and Evaluation System, Chapter III).Is the main source of orientation of the student and as defined the codification of subjects composing it, itsvalue in credits, the number of theoretical and practice hours per week, the order of prerequisites and thetotal of credits required by the career to achieve the graduation. Its disclosure it’s ruled by a uniform formatto all University. The academic load of a student will be determined by the plan of study, this is, will be able to take thenumber of credits allowed by the plan on each semester. If the plan of study is altered several situations can result:In the first term is important to determine if the modification within the plan compose an inferior level to theone attending the student. In this event, the student will continue being ruled by the original curriculum, even when is about an addition of subjects, except that the Academic Board settle the contrary. The second situation is outlined when the correction is of a superior level to the one in course. Here thestudent should take the subjects added to the plan, whenever the Academic Board expressly submitted thatway. Otherwise the student will be ruled by its original curriculum. The plan of study in addition of being a source of orientation of the student, constitute the predominantelement in the contracting academic relations emerged between the University and the student, thereforeit is revealed in the offered plan of study.Further change does not injure the interest and the student’s status, even if the institution reserves the rightto produce the corrections it may deem appropriate to maintain its academic quality.(UNPHU)Universidad NacionalPedro Henríquez Ureña 54
The situation of the student who ends his/her curricula and does not submit the grade work on time isdifferent. In this case, by regulation he/she must take the courses added to the curriculum. The substitution of a subject by another (even through equivalences), within a plan of studies implies amodification to it and its approval is competence of the Academic Board. If the Academic Board eliminates a subject of a plan of studies, the student does not have obligation toattend to the subject to complete the curriculum. MASTERS IN TROPICAL CARIBBEAN ARCHITECTUREINTRODUCTIONThe Caribbean region is part of that great band that we might call the «tropical world», which in economicterms consists of a number of nations in the development process. The Caribbean or the Great Caribbeanis structured, in addition as its particular geographical features, by the synergy of the great cultural diversitythat inhabits it, thus constituting a population essentially syncretic. We understand that there are fourimportant considerations to note in terms of displaying a unique and self-understanding regarding theCaribbean: 1. The people and their needs 2. The climate and its problems 3. Materials and constructionmethods, and 4. The aesthetics of the Region. Therefore it is important to train human resources of highacademic and scientist level, with integral vision of the issues, conditions and characteristics of architecturein Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.BACKGROUNDUniversidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, sponsored by the European Union and Lomé IV, developedon 1998 up to 2003 the Program of Master in Conservation of Monuments and Cultural Goods. The programof regional characteristics had a term of 5 years and four promotions, with near 50 scholarships within thecountry and the Caribbean.(UNPHU)Universidad NacionalPedro Henríquez Ureña 70

SCHOOL OF AGRONOMYThe School of Agronomy was created on year 1966 at the foundation of UNPHU. In 45 years of existencecontinues graduating more than 2,000 agronomist and veterinaries who to influenced in a remarkable waythe national agricultural development. A lot of our graduates are educated to be capable professionals intheir area of study and to be responsible citizens in the performance of their career.Even having several outlets for the career of agronomy, in these moments we offer the title of AgronomistEngineer concentrated on Production of cultivation. The career has 155 enrolled to be attended in 10semesters. The student is exposed to the latest advantages in modern agriculture and ecology responsible. In a similar way they receive training in managerial and administrative techniques that allows them to be asuccessful entrepreneur of the agriculture. The reality is that in the tropical area the biotic and a- biotic agents cause great losses to the agricultureand cattle rising, therefore is a must that the professional of the agriculture could differentiate by mean ofdiagnostic between the different factors in the production unit, being able to suggest and take more precisedecisions. The School of Agronomy was the pioneer in DR on introducing in the decade of the 90’s at Post Graduatelevel the Master in Sciences in Agriculture Diversification, modules of organic agriculture and agriculture inprotected environments. This icon of the agriculture academy in the country has leaded us to acknowledgmentin the public and private agricultural sector and allowed us to continue receiving financing for the conductionof investigations optimizing both production systems.
