TANUJA PAUL AND PAUL K JACOB MODARCHS CONSULTANTS CHENNAI FOAID 2020
Project Name : The Hangar Bar The Hanger Bar at the Cochin International Airport Terminal T2 departure terminal is a well-designed premium airline lounge Location : Cochin International Airport bar that is intended to transport passengers from a transit zone that is utilitarian at best into a peaceful oasis that is human in Site Area: 7500 sft approx scale and restorative in effect. As Architects we believe that Airport Bar interiors are in the spotlight, with big names stamping Project Area : 6000 sft their mark on the spaces that make or break a long journey. The concept was to fit in a Irish pub feel within an aeroplane hangar like high truss roof space. We achieved this by defining the character of the horizontal space below the truss to resemble a Irish pub and the vertical space above to be characterised to adopt a refined hangar space. The drama of height and the carving and blending of two concepts within a space has, fittingly become a space that travellers find respite during long journeys. The space faces directly onto the runway with amazing views of the aircrafts, so we provided massive windows to admire the airplanes taking off and landing – this feature is a big trend among airport Bar and lounge designs though not many lounges have been able to provide.. Initiation of the Project : 2018 It's a large lounge so we broke the scale down by introducing different ceiling heights to create intimate spaces. It was crucial Completion of the Project : 2019 to create a comfortable, relaxing environment in which the choice of facilities is clearly presented to passengers as soon as they Client Name : Cochin International Airport enter the space so that they can enjoy their stay in the Bar to the maximum, depending on how they wish to spend their time Design Team : Tanuja Paul and there. The key element was ensuring that seating clusters cater to both individuals and groups of varying sizes without any one person being able to take perceived \"ownership\" of a particular area. The concept behind the configuration of the seating was Paul K Jacob with the intention of offering a variety of seating environments, from relaxing community tables with benches to high work Photo Credit : Bimal Kumar tables, to sitting around the bar counter thus to give the traveller options to unwind. At the same time the Bar layout has been designed to work efficiently for the operator keeping in mind their service-related issues. Since the passenger traffic in airports is heavy and renovations are rare, we kept quality and durability as a priority while selecting material and finishes. So for the Hangar Bar we designed solid teakwood furniture so that it can take the wear and tear due to the usage of space and people dragging their luggage through will be an impact on fabric so that was a conscious attempt to not use it thereby allowing the design \"can take the knocks, and not just look good\". A balanced contrast between textures and volumes evokes the essence of the space thus providing aesthetic order to produce a calming atmosphere. Greyscale tones guide the entire project, used for tile flooring, and wall treatments. Teak wood and hints of rust, teal and navy break up the interiors and enliven the otherwise cool tones. The Hangar Airport bar design was guided by 'function before design', and our design proposal expounds, The upside of working on airport bars, so that clients are often willing to invest in quality. \"Bars are designed for highest premium customer, so clients want to get it right. Everything matters and that's refreshing as an architect, especially in an airport environment.\" Our main goal was to make the bar feel like an escape from the busy airport, but still celebrate the spirit of aviation……like an oasis in the desert. Each project has its own challenges, which often relate to budgetary and programming constraints but nevertheless designing airport Bars and Lounges continues to be such an immersive, enjoyable and challenging experience.

Anticipating the freedom in a working environment, the office is zoned into formal and informal sections. Exposed workstations endorsing interactions occupy the formal zone while elongated built-in workstations along the perimeter of office wall occupy the informal zone. To promote a close-knit office culture between the employee and the employer, the co-founder’s office is exposed, while being separated by bespoke interiors such as quirky hanging chairs with an extended visual connection to outer environment. A multifunctional space to accommodate professional shoots and events elaborates the functional precision in design. Extending the informal zone further, the cafeteria is placed in a cosy corner of the office with a vista of Mumbai’s cityscape. The interior colour palette is well-compiled in a contrasting manner to further enhance the quirky spaces. The bold use of a solid yellow backdrop for logo display is contrasted by the white reception desk label to mark the identity of the space; wherein the lounge seating adjacent to a vivid wall mural is crafted in a combination of grey and cool colours that blend well with the stark backdrop. Sharing a visual connection with the reception, conference and discussion rooms, it also radiates the vibrance of warm colours, nurturing the creative discussions of young minds. Juxtaposing this pungent colour compilation, the work station area is designed to be a liberal space, dotted with white furniture which is vigilant on grey concrete flooring. Solid colours and shapes of the carpets break the monotony of noble grey concrete flooring, creating a picturesque frame amidst each volume. Contemporary art and eclectic furniture fill the entire 10,000 square feet of the open plan. Art endures the creativity of the design; customized to each space and plane in a pop colour palette, it commands the design vocabulary. Ceiling fixtures, walls arts, paintings, furniture; each art form engraves a different sensory experience for the user’s mind. The seven-feet-long wall mural that welcomes one to this art extravaganza is created with bottle caps in monochromes of varied colours, adding texture to the visual scape. The ‘Flock of birds’ art piece on the ceiling, is another enticing facet of the office; inspired by the evening sky, it augments the persona of the micro-environment and covers the exposed duct work. 128
