Project Name The vision the client had for this parcel of land nestled in the urban fabric of the city of Cochin was a built space that would facilitate collaboration and encourage people to come together. The Courtyard The aspect of the brief that was most complex was the fact that the space had to house three diverse functions –a management consultant’s office, an artist’s studio and an architectural Location practice. Apart from designing working spaces for each, there had to be a separate area for public events. Kerala A space where the management consultant would host conventions and seminars; the artist envisioned a space that could transform into an exhibition area to display her artwork and that of lesser known artists, the architectural practice needed a space to host workshops and awareness programmes on sustainable practices which is inherent in the building fabric. This is a project that aims to challenge the notions of mud as a primitive and perishable material. It is a contemporary take on the vernacular architecture of Kerala. It comes away from the unwritten rules of office or public spaces that stress on artificial light & ventilation, and boldly makes a statement through its openness and proximity to nature, hence the name- the Courtyard. 298

Project Name Mass Housing is the need of the hour in the World’s fastest growing city, Bengaluru. Within an urban concrete-jungle, Radiance IRIS seeks to be a green refuge from the ever-growing Radiance IRIS pressures of development. We had to achieve this within the housing market pressures to make the project affordable. Location The Design focusses on creating a sustainable community which simultaneously achieves the Bangalore major challenge of high built-up area and low selling price. Clusters of row-houses interspersed with Pockets of Natural Vegetation, Social spaces and Shared facilities forms the project. Detailed studies and simulations were done to understand how to maximise natural light and ventilation inside each home. Existing trees were mapped and the buildings were planned around them to preserve the native vegetation. Effective Solar-Energy capture and Sensitive Water-management were incorporated from the Design Stage. The project is all set to receive GOLD Certification from the IGBC – Indian Green Building Council under IGBC Green Residential Societies. 304

Project Name ‘Ba ni Oshari’- Verandah in a Mother’s house is a C- shaped otta where the cultural program- ‘Dayra’ is held in the centre and is a part of a building. Bani Oshari Thereby we decided to create a C- shaped otta depicting a building creating the doors and Location windows that opened out to the otta. ‘Dayra’ is an interesting cultural event related to literature where the Oshari becomes the stage and they enjoyed the program sitting in front of it. Surat The clients left these 20 years back and now they wanted to relive those moments they enjoyed when they were young. We felt as if we were designing a theatre set in the entire process and believed that we added the most value in the various traditional elements like columns, brackets, jharokha, railings, doors and windows that we bounded together to form the entire space as one, which in itself became one of the most unique elements in the design. 311

Project Name The project brief was to design a Resto bar with a spacious outlook. Xochi Resto-Bar The challenge was to design a structure which could be dismantled and completely reused. Location The idea of using MS fabrication in the entire structure solved the given constraint. Later, the Bangalore design started framing around that. The most appealing characteristics of the restaurant is the combination of modern and industrial outlook giving its veterans a unique experience in the Dine-in world along with nature. The zoning is done in such a way that it comprehends the typical planning concept of green Bangalore by providing ample open space in the front yard. It is designed around its central axis which provides an uninterrupted view on all side, with the green space in the south western corner underlining the Inside-Out concept. The material palette includes Black painted MS fabrication, IPS flooring, Brick and glass. Louvers used on the façade which helps with cross ventilation and keeps the ambience in the Restaurant nonchalant; creating an Industrial look and the interior feels spacious and well-lit. 317

Project Name Limited construction was client’s motive due to having a limited budget. Maharastrian Cuisine, a traditional Maharastriansmokeful food was client’s intention to serve.Client wanted to stay unaffected for the Dhone Wada (Restaurant) ambience by the two working warehouses around the restaurant. Location CONCEPT NOTE:Traditional approach towards contemporary design. Pune The Courtyard Architecture, which is referred to Maratha Wada architecture. The style dealth with air and light resulting to substantial ventilation of both.Considering and taking care of client's niche requirements and requests of his intension's to serve Maharastrian cuisine, minimum construction in the odd-shaped plot was challenging, to which an idea of a Courtyard Architecture referred as 'Wada architecture 'shown as with a plan to the client. DESIGN PROCESS: Archetype wada windows with wooden railing are used to render the wada look to the facade of the restaurant and traditional square criss cross jaali railing, glass panels (pardi), and wooden pillars with stone base are elements used inside. DESCRIPTION OF IMMEDIATE SURROUNDING: This site is located in the outskirts of Pune (warje) on the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway between the tin sheet structured warehouses hence an idea of inward looking interior was established where locals and travelers can get the feel of traditional wada structures for which Pune is identified. CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS: Straight look and feel in the odd shaped plot is achieved by defocusing and by planning partitioned family baithak area along the odd side of the plot. Tin sheet structures of the adjacent properties was challenging which is covered by dense creepers and the remaining is painted and blended in the restaurant's color palette.“Sabha mandap” the four sided open M.S. structure was one of the challenge to deal from rain and access sunlight.

Pune The campus is a collection of simple structures arranged around an informal series of walkways, courtyards, gardens and terraces. Culled from local and universal examples of academic, domestic, public and sacred spaces, the architecture responds to site, program and climate, addressing the needs of the community to provide a sanctuary for learning. There are close to 18 ashrams around the world and all of them look similar to the one in Bangalore. The trustees of Pune ashram wanted this ashram to have its own unique identity and wanted to set an example on how a modern-day ashram would look/ perform. At the same time the construction cost had to be as low as possible as the funds for the buildings were generated by donations only and nothing was to be taken from the main Art of Living trust in Bangalore. 329

Project Name The project was built for and commissioned by a charity which imparts training and mentoring Vocational Training Center for People Living with HIV(PLHIV). Located at Carmelaram, Bangalore, it is centered around a Location candle making workshop with ancillary spaces comprising of a display unit, a store, and a seminar hall envisioned as an inclusive space to showcase the various activities run by the Bengaluru trust. The site chosen within the 10 acre property dotted with several trees all of which was retained and the spaces are nestled around them. Built on a tight budget, the design follows an overarching aesthetic of simple clean lines. This allows for the individuality of the materials to stand out and at the same time complement each other perfectly. The green foliage was kept intact and the building fabric was detailed in a way that would frame this foliage. Mud was the material chosen for the walls – this works beautifully not only in terms of creating a healthier building but the process of manufacture of the mud bricks involved the users of the building as well, thus giving a sense of belonging with the structure as well. 336
