ATHIBA BALASUBRAMANIAN MAKRA WORKS FOAID 2020

Project Name Brick is one of the most popular and important building materials in architectural history and brickwork was predominantly used in domestic and industrial architecture. While many of these House of 2 Palms buildings are still operating today, it comes as no surprise that refurbishment and reuse are highly recommended techniques in the present day. Location The challenge lies in reusing these buildings and recycling the materials available, with the Chennai primary goal being to retain as mush of the original structure. House of 2 Palms was a 40 year old dilapidated brick bungalow that was repurposed into a classic and minimalist residential complex. The project serves to be an example of minimising the construction wastage and reducing the carbon emissions through effective reuse of existing building materials. The interiors are predominantly in muted tones, the facade of the structure has a 30’ foot long perforated Brick wall that wraps up the main staircase and the veranda’s of both the units. The Brick Jalli is oriented in such a way to drive in the predominant winds from NE and SE directions throughout the year. Furthermore, the brick screen along with the one foot thick walls help regulate the inner temperature, thus aiding in reduced electricity consumption. The result is a timeless structure that wears the heart of construction on its sleeve - which is and always will be the brick! 350

Project Name The H – House being an adobe for a joint family was required to be created as a relaxing, enfolding environment which, while providing a view to the surrounding lush landscape, H-House manages to maintain a series of privacy. The private residence is designed to flow with how the family functions in their routine life, Location breaking down to a simple formula _ Private v/s Public. Hence the arrangement has been divided into two wings connected by the circulation making it an H-shape layout. Surat The building stands strong on its own with minimal, yet simple architectural forms. The character of the residence is generated by the inclusion of an off-form solid mass that dramatically cantilevers over the underlying spaces. The upper volume is stone cladded, creating the illusion of floating atop the delicate glass from below. The monotony of the solid box is broken up by the timber-looking aluminium screen which serves to soften the robust stone cladded texture. The screen allows dappled light to animate the private bedroom spaces and the centralized courtyard. 356

RACHANA MAROLI RGP DESIGN STUDIO FOAID 2020

Project Name A modern, yet tropical home set in a lush coconut plantation is the 5600 sq.ft new home. The house is reminiscent of “Guthu mane”, a traditional Mangalorean House, though with a modern Mangalore House twist. We have revived the essence of a traditional tropical home with a desire for contemporary design, which was key in developing a floor plan for the home. Location The open plan of the house has a minimalist design and allows one space to flow seamlessly Mangalore into another. The design exhibits a gentle transition of spaces from indoor to outdoors through wooden decks and terraces that create cosy, semi-outdoor areas that gives one a feeling of being outside when they are actually inside. The house is endowed with bright, voluminous and airy spaces with well-designed outdoor landscaping that bring out a tropical and contemporary charm to the house. The design of spaces is mellifluous. While the materials used not only have an aesthetic appeal, they also regulate indoor temperatures, especially in the hot and humid Mangalore weather. 361

Project Name This plan has been conceptualized as a cluster of 3 spaces integrating into one home designed to suit the needs and climatically correct encouraging nature to take over. Journeying into three The Screen House living spaces and not a house. Location The house has a harmonious spirit and an unpretentious ambience. Everything was planned in rhythm: architecture, landscape and interiors. Each house has a waterbody at the entrance Ahmedabad porch and a personal sit out in continuum. The intent was to keep the homes warm and welcoming, a house that always remains open. A living space that merges with the garden, so that it almost becomes a part of it. The constant presence of water in every house infuses serenity. The screens protect and form a transparent curtain to the garden maintaining a visual connectivity between exterior and interior. A co– evolution which resulted in a coherent structure and style and expression maintaining architectural vocabulary. 366

Project Name While designing our own studio we wanted to have a space which would work as crucible for Studio Anhad the creative minds and at the same time also soothe ones soul. Location We tried to create a multi-functional workspace where one can work, explore, read, interact, Lonavla relax and can indulge with the nature. The unique situation of we being the client ourselves with a shoe-string budget compelled us to come up with creative solutionsto transform the existing space into the one which would be the reflection of our own work style. The Theme Recycle-reuse- reduce can be seen practiced at many encounters=The open plan layout eliminates the hierarchical order of seating. An indoor garden with a welcoming water body creates a calm and soothing environment enhancing creativity within. Low height storage units are used as partitions to create a resting and reading space next to a service area with a pantry and toilet. A minimal material pallet with subtle colours has created a warm and comfortable space of work. We have tried maintaining the honesty of materials by using them in their natural textures and colours. 372

Project Name At the beginning of the project, looking at the site, it is observed that it comprise of a complex Follow the grid structural grid with the irregular placement of beams and columns. Location It was onerous to place functions within this complex structural grid. Hence to resolve the Surat clarity of spaces, the project takes its inspiration from the series of paintings by artist Piet Mondrian, Where he tries to find a visual equilibrium within the framed network of unevenly placed lines and balance them with colors. We undertook a similar exercise to achieve the balance and synergy within the workspace keeping the irregular structural grid as base work and further balancing the zones with colors. As a result, a series of iterations with the various placement of zones were obtained. These iterations are then investigated based on light quality and ease of space to achieve the ideal workspace. The basic idea was to take advantage of complexity to facilitate a balanced workspace environment. 379

Project Name The Expand Loft is characterised as an open office space, designed for a corporate event The Expand Loft management company. The design brief was to create a vibrant environment for its employees, Location while facilitating a natural flow of movement, encouraging interaction, and promoting collaboration. Mumbai The entire office has been crafted with an approximately 14-foot high ceiling, with panoramic windows that offer expansive views of the city. Taking inspiration from the company logo, hints of yellow are added throughout the space to build on brand recall. The concept of an open pantry has been planned to create an informal setting, wherein the spaciousness seamlessly extends into the open cafeteria. The introduction of quirky design elements to the neutral interior enables a stark contrast with the office's industrial look, while augmenting its classy appeal. A modern, minimal, and an oasis for social interplay, the design of the office aims to boost creativity by optimising the use of an energetic pop of colour, appropriately, to exude a feeling of liveliness and well-being for the office users. 385

Project Name One of the most significant components for designing a grand commercial bar is setting the HOG Taproom overall vibe and energy of the space. The client wanted a vibrant place wherein the visitors Location would love to spend a few extra hours with their martinis and have an electrifying experience. CONCEPT NOTE - The layout of this taproom or lounge area of 1100 sq.ft was set in such a Mumbai way that it would maximize the sitting area openly and also cater to the need of required openings for the same. All the services were placed at the back-end to avoid any sort of abashment while managing the space constraints. The project has even got several playful grooves finished with different categories of material in a sophisticated manner. DESIGN PROCESS - The floor plate is mainly segregated into three major spaces. The bar is the first zone open for the visitors to sit and enjoy their drinks. The entrance gives a buffer space before you arrive in the sitting zone. The dynamic open ceiling being an “exposed structure” or “open plenum” ceiling manages to give an industrial look to the bar. The showcased bar has L-shape which turns out to be more of an ornamental component due to its striking orange color. The counter top is treated with a natural Kappada stone with river polish to restore a brilliant gleam. The central zone comprises of two high tables suspended from the ceiling surrounded by heightened chairs. This visual has a sassy touch to it and is primarily placed to break the monotony in the sitting area by providing an element of surprise to space. The third space is the casual sitting area with a very alluring set of furniture. The showcase area of the bar came out to be a cheerful corner. It has been intentionally kept light using materials like mirrors and SS Sheet reflecting the volume according to the scarcity of space. The upper portion for the same reason has been created with a mesh structure of MS steel with black coated pipes to maintain the required balance.
