stain (1.11) mancha (es) mancha (pt) λεκές (ελ) Damage that manifests itself through the alteration of the original color in certain areas of objects. See also: adhesive stain; water stain; foxing; rust stain. Note: the term stain is generic and, therefore, in diagnostics, it is necessary to specify its cause, indicating whether it is due to fungi action, degraded adhesives, rusty objects (staples, clips), insect droppings, paint and ink residue, oils and greases, uneven ageing, among many other possibilities. 360
tear (1.20) rotura (es) rasgo (pt) σχίσιμο (ελ) Damage derived from paper rupture by means of tension, leaving paper fibers exposed. See also: cut. 362

adhesive removal (2.2) remoción de adhesivo (es) remoção de adesivo (pt) αφαίρεση αυτοκόλλητων – κόλλας (ελ) Procedure carried out to remove materials that have been adhered to documents and compromise their condition, such as pressure-sensitive tapes, labels, aged adhesives. 376
Microscope image of paper treated with a dispersion of calcium hydroxide nanoparticles.
alkaline reserve (2.6.2.1) reserva alcalina (es) reserva alcalina (pt) αλκαλικό απόθεμα (ελ) Alkaline substance inserted within paper fibers during deacidification and alkalization treatments which works as a buffer and protects the paper from the acid hydrolysis of cellulose. See also: deacidification, alkalization; neutralization. 378
Microscope image of paper treated with a dispersion of calcium hydroxide nanoparticles.
alkalization (2.6.2) alcalinización (es) alcalinização (pt) αλκαλοποίηση (ελ) Application of an alkaline substance which increases paper pH levels and is deposited as alkaline reserve between its fibers, capable of protecting paper from the acid hydrolysis of cellulose. See also: deacidification; neutralization; alkaline reserve. 380
backing removal (2.4) remoción de soporte adherido (es) remoção de suporte aderido (pt) αφαίρεση υποστηρίγματος (ελ) Procedure of removal of a secondary support adhered to the main support that might damage the artefact. 382

bleaching (2.8) blanqueo (es) clareamento (pt) λεύκανση (ελ) Treatment applied in paper-based artifacts to eliminate or soften stains, and discoloration due to ageing or microorganisms action. See also: stain removal Note: Bleaching is a controversial treatment, usually applied for aesthetic reasons, but results in the physical-chemical degradation of paper. There is a long list of products traditionally employed by conservators in bleaching processes, but not all are viable or safe to be used in conservation labs. There are also bleaching processes that do not use chemical products, for instance, those that employ artificial light or sunlight. 384
cleaning (2.1) limpieza (es) limpeza (pt) καθαρισμός (ελ) Procedure carried out to remove dirt and other substances that can compromise the conservation and integrity of paper-based objects or for aesthetics reasons. See also: surface cleaning. Note: Among the many existing types of cleaning procedures are dry cleaning methods, such as the use of erasers, and wet cleaning methods, such as baths. 386
deacidification (2.6) desacidificación (es) desacidificação (pt) αποξίνιση (ελ) Chemical stabilization treatment carried out by applying alkaline substances that neutralize acidity in paper and deposit an alkaline reserve between fibers. See also: neutralization; alkalization; alkaline reserve. Note: The alkaline reserve inserted between fibers works as a buffer substance that protects the paper from the acidic degradation of cellulose. Deacidification does not reverse degradation already caused by an acid hydrolisis process. Although it is considered a beneficial treatment for paper, its application must be carefully assessed, since there is a risk of change in media colors, darkening of paper with high levels of lignin. It should be applied only to acidic paper. 388
dry pulp fill (2.13.4) resane (es) obturação (pt) συμπλήρωση με ξηρό χαρτοπολτό (ελ) Treatment procedure for support loss in which dry paper pulp is applied to small areas of loss in the original support. See also: filling of losses; wet pulp fill; insert; leaf casting. 390
drying (2.9) secado (es) secagem (pt) στέγνωμα (ελ) Conservation procedure carried out after aqueous treatments in order to remove moisture from the paper. See also: flattening; humidification. Note: drying must be carried out at a slow and gradual pace, to ensure there are no disruption or distortions in the paper. It can be carried out between blotting papers or without them, in drying racks or under pressure. 392
filling of losses (2.13) reintegración (es) reintegração (pt) συμπλήρωση (ελ) Action that aims to reestablish missing parts of a paper object. In paper conservation, mechanical or manual fills are carried out through the insertion of cellulose pulp or new paper in the areas of loss. See also: dry pulp fill; wet pulp fill; leaf casting; insert. 394
fixing (2.17) fijado (es) fixação de mídia (pt) στερέωση (ελ) Treatment carried out to ensure the protection of soluble media during aqueous treatments or the stability and permanence of friable media. This treatment can be adopted as a temporary or permanent measure. See also: media consolidation. 396
Flattening by stretch drying
flattening (2.11) devolución de plano (es) planificação (pt) επιπεδοποίηση (ελ) Procedure carried out to eliminate paper cockling and deformation, usually carried out after humidification. See also: humidification; drying. Note: The procedure can be carried out using pressure (between screens, blotting paper, plates and weights, for example) or using tension (applying techniques in which the edges of the object are fixed into a surface). 398
humidification (2.10) humectación (es) umidificação (pt) ύγρανση (ελ) Procedure consisting of the application of controlled moisture on paper, through spraying, with brushes, by contact with another moistened material, or in humidification chambers, to make it more flexible, especially if it is curled, dried and brittle. See also: flattening; drying. Note: usually, humidification is employed before flattening to correct deformations, such as folds, cocklings and creases. It is also performed before washings, to soften abrupt contact between dry paper and water. 400
