SONALI & MANIT RASTOGI MORPHOGENESIS INTEGRATING THE BUILT FORM WITH THE EXISTING LANDSCAPE FOAID 2020
Project Name : The Lalit Suri Hospitality Education in India typically takes a socialist approach, which means it needs to be made available to Complex all. Thus, available resources need to be stringently managed to make this approach monetarily viable. With the Lalit Suri Hospitality Institute, the design challenge is the imparting of education in the service Location : NCR of Luxury Hospitality, whilst being set within a modest institutional framework. Morphogenesis’ design Site Area : 5.00 Acres approach addresses the institute’s vision of hospitality skills development, operational exposure, Project Area : 2,50,000 Sq.Ft managerial competence and a strategic outlook by ensuring that each space has a duality of purpose- Initiation of the Project : April 2010 one in its educational avatar and one as a setting conducive to the experience of luxury hospitality. This Completion of the Project : July 2019 (Phase-1) flexibility in space-function is reflected across the entire project. Cafeterias are converted to F&B Client Name : Bharat Hotels Limited outlets, where the students eat as well as learn service. The kitchens are designed to enable students Design Team : Manit Rastogi, Sonali Rastogi, to cook as well as practice their service skills. The entire hostel accommodation is built in a hotel format, where even public gathering spaces are designed to be serviced like congregational spaces Alok John DeCruz, Manish Lohia within hotels. Photo Credit : Morphogenesis The Northern edge of the site is populated with a dense Neem (Azadirachta Indica) tree grove. The planning strategy worked around preserving this grove and integrating it into the overall design, using it to shade the open and semi-open spaces in front of the building. The built form engages and intertwines with the tree clusters by moving back and forth. The material of choice was brick, as apart from being synonymous with institutional buildings in India, it was also a natural economical choice, being locally sourced and produced. This project plays with different forms and levels of fenestrations, revealing interesting gaps, thus reinventing the tradition of the jaali and jharoka (a type of overhanging enclosed balcony). Light-wells, courtyard planning, thermal buffering and jaalis lead to a micro-climate, reducing mechanical energy dependencies, optimizing resource consumption resulting in an institute that is Net Zero on Energy and Water with an EPI of 58kWh/sq.m./yr. All rooms are multiples of a single optimized bay module. This modular approach to planning enhances the flexibility and multiplicity of spaces and operations. Open areas are designed to work as spill-over spaces to encourage interaction among the occupants. The hostel rooms are planned in a manner that allows the students to experience ‘Hospitality’ in a hotel room format. The project addresses flexibility in space-function as an approach towards optimizing resources. The duality of function along with the muted material palette and passive design strategies aid in providing a world class quality of learning experience, progressive in style and content but at an affordable price.

AMRUTHA KISHOR ELEMENTAL FOAID 2020
Project Name The Eco-House at Kottayam, Kerala is tailor-made to suit the lifestyle of the client. Numerous passive cooling strategies have been implemented to match the home’s tropical surroundings. A The Eco-House truly critically regional structure, the design of the Eco House, is a minimalist take on traditional Kerala Architecture. Location Built with burnt clay bricks and minimal concrete, the well-ventilated home is topped with Kerala Mangalore tiles on trusswork. An air cavity is formed in between the Mangalore tiles and the concrete ceiling creates a layer of insulation from the scorching sun. Along with the wind tower and mechanical exhaust system, the Eco-house cools itself during Kerala's hot summers. Good daylighting is one of the prime features of the Eco-House. Although there are plenty of windows, the protruding sunshades at the Eco-House allow only indirect sunlight to come in, minimising solar heat gain. The white interior walls reflect light coming in to brighten up the rooms. Wood from the locality was sourced to build the windows, staircase and furniture and only local species are used for landscaping. The Eco-house promotes a sustainable lifestyle with a dedicated compost system, cultivation of vegetables and fruits on-site and the reuse of harvested rainwater for irrigation. 334

ARJUN DOSHI STUDIO ACROBAT FOAID 2020
Project Name Developed as a residential Vedic school for local and regional talent, this academy and athletic facility will accommodate more than 500 students on the 19-acre site. Built inside an Ved Path Shala abandoned laterite quarry, the fertile site will be home to facilities for multiple Vedic studies, agriculture, sports and classrooms and housing for the students. Location During the process of excavation, large amounts of lateritic mud were excavated on site which Cuttack was tested with the help of ProfesorYoganandji from Mrunmayie in Bangalore. After testing the mud at their lab in Bangalore, they suggested that we work entirely in mud concrete. Primarily an intervention in the landscape, the architecture emerges from the gently sloping terrain and was constructed using laterite quarried from the site. The Veda boys were to be part of the construction work as it is part of the curriculum so we set a module wherein most of the construction process could be explained to them. One of the best sites we have received so far, rarely you get a client who asks you to construct inside a quarry. Cuttack experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. And we were located right on top a huge laterite mound which would heat up during the day creates an extremely hot and humid condition. So our concept was entirely based on how we can make this weather work for our buildings for passive cooling. 341
