KRISTEL SEQUEIRA & SHIKHA GUPTA STORYSTUDIO IN COLLABORATION WITH FRDC FOAID 2020

Project Name Named after an ornate textile pattern originating in the heart of the sub-continent, “Bagh” offers a uniquely wide range of indian apparel with motifs deeply rooted in Indian craft.A store is Bagh designed for discovery, the space offers a distinct experience that negotiates abundance in choice yet rarity in design. Location The particular challenge in design was managing high densities of merchandise while assuring Bengaluru minimal visual clutter. This was achieved through a seamless marriage of function and craft that is intricately detailed yet deceptively simple. The transformative nature of the store helps the brand showcase new collections and seasonal highlights there by creating a fresh experience for the customer every time. The brand derives its inspiration from Bagh - a traditional indian print - typically geometric, paisley or floral compositions hand printed by wooden block using naturally sourced pigments and dyes. This inspiration is spotlit across the store in the form of custom built metal screens draped in khari linen and block printed with the brand’s signature patterns. Bagh’s spatial identity, much like its product, is the story of humble materials elevated to the aspirational. 701

PRERNA AGGARWAL STUDIO ARDETE FOAID 2020

Project Name The client, Mr. ManojBansal, owns a business of plywood, laminate and decorative surfaces from the past 20 years. He approached us for the interiors for an extension of his existing retail Timber Rhyme space. He wished to expand his business and venture into decorative and hi-end veneers. He was looking for a comfortable and interesting and retail space for his clients. Location The design problem was posed with an existing 71’ by 18’ linear block in a market complex of Chandigarh the modern city of Chandigarh. Timber Rhyme became the voice given to the material sold by the store owner/client—who deals with veneers and plywood, and tells the story of the traditional relationship between the craftsman and wood. The result is an interior-installation instantly poetic: a “spatial matrix” that has evocative ribbons of wood twisting and turning within the space, almost like it has a mind of its own. Due to shift in times and new engineered materials, the dialogue between a carpenter and a product has perished. The installation is a byproduct of this concern, an elemental ribbon that can be the subject of a conversation while being a facilitator of the same. The design process involved ribbons that were digitally fabricated with the help of a definition in Grasshopper, a computational design tool, which led to the formulation of plywood ribs of doubly-curved geometries that interlocked at 6-inch intervals. This “waffle structure” was then put together with use of 19mm plywood ribs, 3mm Flexi-ply, and 1.5 mm paper veneer—each cut and handled by the carpenters. The craftsmen further jig-sawed the rib in-situ, in unidirectional arrangement. While the technology formulated the development of the design, the carpenters took ownership of the creation with their experience and “telltale knowledge”. 706

SHIVARANJANI KUMBAR & GURUPRAKASH GOVINDASAMY BARE.PINEAPPLE FOAID 2020

PROJECT NAME Studio built by client himself using locally available sadarhalli stones by hand for his wife, a designer of Indian ethnic and contemporary clothing, where she could display her work, meet SheethalSathnur’s Boutique clients and design. With this brief, we started our exploration into a minimalistic space where her works remained as the focus. LOCATION Concept Note: Bengaluru Design exploration of golden accents with darker tones has been done for this boutique, so that designer apparel becomes the highlight of the space. Design process: Geometry of kolam i.e., grid of points in space, with patterns of iterated lily flower is interlaid on horizontal surfaces and continued on vertical surfaces, combining the elements of design together with geometrical collision of linear lines of light is expressed over display areas to emphasize on the products. Architectural intervention is made on the existing site building by creating a “pool of reflection” at the entrance, with landscaped greens throughout the site and a metal pergola to add enclosure and grandeur. Addition of mirrors to the design act as an element of expression and reflection by blurring the boundaries between inside and outside, virtually bringing the landscape indoors. Mirrors in the trial area also break the sense of spatial limitation with infinite reflections. Simple geometrical patterns, layered with lighting elements sitting in harmony with an infinity portal that creates an illusion of a larger space, deliver a “space of display.” 712

UDAAI BATRA & NAVNEET KAUR BORA DA` DESIGNS FOAID 2020

Project Name Designing Torani Flagship store was a short journey for all of the design team. It was exciting to have a client not interested in the modern or the luxury or the eclectic or any style that we Torani usually see. Location Torani draws deep inspiration from Sindhi culture and its design elements and incorporated them beautifully in their clothes. The brief, hence, was simple - Sindhi Architecture. New Delhi The brief was to create the space clean, void of any clutter in terms of planning the displays so as to hi-light the product mirroring the very heritage it draws inspiration from the 16th century buildings comprising of magnificent domes and beautiful curvilinear arches. The brief also required everything unfinished and antique from floor to walls to ceiling. The space had to look bare yet reflection of the rich Sindh cultural heritage. To achieve the above we had to follow and articulate the following theme and concept. It was simple where the design team had to work on the classical design elements reminiscing the Sindhi Architecture while the whole was to be bare. The basic theme revolves around the earthy colours and rawness of materials. The entire store is painted in a grey hue with a rough grainy texture. The fixtures are left in the raw state for implying the very theme. The whole store resonates the idea of simple clean design without the obvious ornamentation. Any element only reflects the very soul of the product and their inspiration. 717
