Project Name The design responds to the cold temperate climate of the Himalayan mountains, remoteness of the site as well as aims for resilience to earthquakes and landslides. BASA Tourism Center The tourism center is designed with heavy stone filled gabion walls at the bottom and a light Location wooden structure on top. Materials used are locally sourced and are transported easily via small pickup van. Uttarakhand Wood is preferred because it is a natural resource that can be replenished over time. Mud, which is dug out from cutting and filling the site, was used in plastering, reducing the use of cement. Minimum amount of steel is used which can be resold or recycled. A balance between local knowledge and modern construction techniques is incorporated in order to encourage community participation and ownership. The Tourism Center has a community kitchen and a space to display their local produces, on the lower level. The upper floor houses an exhibition portraying the local heritage and culture of Khirsu along with essential information for tourists. 348

SHAMILA MEERAN & FAISAL VOHRA F+S DESIGNS FOAID 2020

Project Name Petcart Nest is a one-of –a-kind pet resort on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The two-acre property lies amidst open fields and mango orchards. Petcart Nest The design intention was to leverage the natural land contours and have an ecologically Location responsible approach. Besides reviving a dried pond and retaining all the trees on site, we consciously employed natural materials to create built forms that would complement and Bengaluru integrate with the surroundings. The buildings are sited such that the natural vistas of the surroundings remain undisturbed. The material and color palette was kept neutral and earthy to blend in. Bamboo, while being a strong, eco-friendly building material, creates a beautiful permeable mesh which allows the structures to 'breathe' and flushes the interiors with sunlight and ventilation. The comfort of the four-legged guests was paramount and the resort was carefully designed with an environment- friendly approach to allow this. There’s a saying that ‘The greenest building is one that is already built.’ Our approach with Petcart Nest has been to Reduce, Recycle and Rejuvenate. 354

SRIDEVI CHANGALI & ROSIE PAUL MASONS INK FOAID 2020

Project Name The vision the client had for this parcel of land nestled in the urban fabric of the city of Cochin was a built space that would facilitate collaboration and encourage people to come together. The Courtyard The aspect of the brief that was most complex was the fact that the space had to house three diverse functions –a management consultant’s office, an artist’s studio and an architectural Location practice. Apart from designing working spaces for each, there had to be a separate area for public events. Kerala A space where the management consultant would host conventions and seminars; the artist envisioned a space that could transform into an exhibition area to display her artwork and that of lesser known artists, the architectural practice needed a space to host workshops and awareness programmes on sustainable practices which is inherent in the building fabric. This is a project that aims to challenge the notions of mud as a primitive and perishable material. It is a contemporary take on the vernacular architecture of Kerala. It comes away from the unwritten rules of office or public spaces that stress on artificial light & ventilation, and boldly makes a statement through its openness and proximity to nature, hence the name- the Courtyard. 360

Project Name Mass Housing is the need of the hour in the World’s fastest growing city, Bengaluru. Within an urban concrete-jungle, Radiance IRIS seeks to be a green refuge from the ever-growing Radiance IRIS pressures of development. We had to achieve this within the housing market pressures to make the project affordable. Location The Design focusses on creating a sustainable community which simultaneously achieves the Bangalore major challenge of high built-up area and low selling price. Clusters of row-houses interspersed with Pockets of Natural Vegetation, Social spaces and Shared facilities forms the project. Detailed studies and simulations were done to understand how to maximise natural light and ventilation inside each home. Existing trees were mapped and the buildings were planned around them to preserve the native vegetation. Effective Solar-Energy capture and Sensitive Water-management were incorporated from the Design Stage. The project is all set to receive GOLD Certification from the IGBC – Indian Green Building Council under IGBC Green Residential Societies. 366

Project Name ‘Ba ni Oshari’- Verandah in a Mother’s house is a C- shaped otta where the cultural program- ‘Dayra’ is held in the centre and is a part of a building. Bani Oshari Thereby we decided to create a C- shaped otta depicting a building creating the doors and Location windows that opened out to the otta. ‘Dayra’ is an interesting cultural event related to literature where the Oshari becomes the stage and they enjoyed the program sitting in front of it. Surat The clients left these 20 years back and now they wanted to relive those moments they enjoyed when they were young. We felt as if we were designing a theatre set in the entire process and believed that we added the most value in the various traditional elements like columns, brackets, jharokha, railings, doors and windows that we bounded together to form the entire space as one, which in itself became one of the most unique elements in the design. 373

ASAD KHAN ID+AS (INTEGRATED DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE STUDIO) FOAID 2020

Project Name The project brief was to design a Resto bar with a spacious outlook. The challenge was to design a structure which could be dismantled and completely reused. Xochi Resto-Bar The idea of using MS fabrication in the entire structure solved the given constraint. Later, the Location design started framing around that. Bangalore The most appealing characteristics of the restaurant is the combination of modern and industrial outlook giving its veterans a unique experience in the Dine-in world along with nature. The zoning is done in such a way that it comprehends the typical planning concept of green Bangalore by providing ample open space in the front yard. It is designed around its central axis which provides an uninterrupted view on all side, with the green space in the south western corner underlining the Inside-Out concept. The material palette includes Black painted MS fabrication, IPS flooring, Brick and glass. Louvers used on the façade which helps with cross ventilation and keeps the ambience in the Restaurant nonchalant; creating an Industrial look and the interior feels spacious and well-lit. 379

DISHA BACHAL DEEPAK BACHAL & ASSO. FOAID 2020

Project Name The brief was to build 8 double occupancy individual units, each having its own outdoor space for a resort near Pune. Contain-Within Shipping container is a standard-sized metal box which can be easily transferred between Location different modes of transportation. They also act like legos and can be easily stacked on top of each other. Pune Many of which are discarded every year if they tend to have some dents on their surface making the structure weak for heavy transportation. We thought of recycling these scrap units and transforming them into livable spaces. Besides trendiness, they are very economical having lower construction and maintenance costs as the structure is already ready. Creating two clusters of 4 units each, we could create a larger common area for each cluster from which one can enjoy the view the waterbody in front of the site. Bamboo, an additional element has been introduced for roofing, to decrease heat gain, partitions and internal furniture, also softening the rigid structure of a container. 391

SHIKHA BANSAL SHIZENSCAPE FOAID 2020

Project Name “When the phoenix resurrects from ashes she is even more beautiful”. The project came to life when the restaurant was compared to the Phoenix bird rising from the ashes. Here, the Le Stone : Fine Dine l structure cladded in Goka Stone is compared to the flames and the outdoors designed in the Lounge l Alfresco shades of black is compared to the ashes. This concept helped in making critical decisions about materials to be used. Location To take advantage of Pune’s blossoming outdoor dining culture, the restaurant is transformed Pune into a trendy dining experience using refurbished wood, antique chandeliers and a natural colour palette to create an on-trend, rustic atmosphere. Entrances act as a welcoming feet to a restaurant. Well-filled stepped planters, lush green lawn and trees dress up the raw rustic entrance. This ambience lit with warm yellow lights creates a perfect soothing atmosphere to welcome the guests. Water is definitely the most important element in a restaurant. It appears in different forms, both visual and audible, and that’s what makes this area authentic and peaceful. LE STONE IS AMALGAMATION OF GRACE AND TRANQUILITY. 396
