VIDUSHI JAIN TOAST BROWN STUDIO FOAID 2020

Project Name The idea for the resort was to serve as a relaxing getaway, away from city life and into the lap of nature. With this thought at the core of our design, we brought in the tropical mood of natural Repose Highway Resort landscapes, serene waterbodies & pavilions inspired from Balinese Architecture, and wove it in with the Vernacular Architecture of Assam. Location The resort is conceptualized around a winding water body, with the Reception Block and five Mangaldai, Assam Cottages overlooking the central landscaped greens. The project is founded on an ethos of sustainability and care for the environment. The material palette is kept earthy and organic using locally sourced stone, reclaimed pine wood and local handicrafts. Be it the wall murals, handicrafts, bespoke light fixtures and furniture in cane & bamboo or the traditional textiles - all elements are a tribute to the rich culture and heritage of Assam. This collaboration between the client, the architects and the local artisans helped create not only a distinguished resort, but a pivot that links the local community together. 403

ARJUN DOSHI STUDIO ACROBAT FOAID 2020

Project Name Built on the banks of TriveniSangam (three river confluence) of river Bhima, Bhama and Indrayani, the ashram at Markal are a collection of simple structures that foster a sense of Art Of Living 'Triveni Ashram' community and form intimate spaces for social interaction, meditation, intimacy, relaxation, and pleasure. Location The campus is a collection of simple structures arranged around an informal series of Pune walkways, courtyards, gardens and terraces. Culled from local and universal examples of academic, domestic, public and sacred spaces, the architecture responds to site, program and climate, addressing the needs of the community to provide a sanctuary for learning. There are close to 18 ashrams around the world and all of them look similar to the one in Bangalore. The trustees of Pune ashram wanted this ashram to have its own unique identity and wanted to set an example on how a modern-day ashram would look/ perform. At the same time the construction cost had to be as low as possible as the funds for the buildings were generated by donations only and nothing was to be taken from the main Art of Living trust in Bangalore. 411

MANUNI PATEL COMPARTMENT S4 FOAID 2020

Project Name The building with its surrounding open play space is an extension to the existing secondary school in Ghuggukham, Uttarakhand. It also acts as a meeting place for the panchayat, a Lakdi Ki Kathi community gathering area and a guesthouse; lending its publicness to the changing needs of the village. Location The site is at the peak of a hill overlooking a lush green valley on which the village spreads Uttarakhand itself. The project is truly public in nature since the entire community, from students to local craftsmen were involved in its conception and production. The participatory design process encouraged community ownership of the otherwise public space. In general, three challenges are addressed by fine-tuning vernacular methods of construction. Firstly, the building is made earthquake resilient by adding bands of wooden beams within the stone walls. Secondly, the practice of rainwater harvesting is adopted with a naturally filtering sedimentation tank responding to water scarcity. Lastly, an additional waterproofing layer sandwiched between slate layers resolves the problem of water leakage in the traditional technique of roof construction. 424

SRIDEVI CHANGALI & ROSIE PAUL MASONS INK FOAID 2020

Project Name The project was built for and commissioned by a charity which imparts training and mentoring for People Living with HIV(PLHIV). Located at Carmelaram, Bangalore, it is centered around a Vocational Training Center candle making workshop with ancillary spaces comprising of a display unit, a store, and a seminar hall envisioned as an inclusive space to showcase the various activities run by the Location trust. Bengaluru The site chosen within the 10 acre property dotted with several trees all of which was retained and the spaces are nestled around them. Built on a tight budget, the design follows an overarching aesthetic of simple clean lines. This allows for the individuality of the materials to stand out and at the same time complement each other perfectly. The green foliage was kept intact and the building fabric was detailed in a way that would frame this foliage. Mud was the material chosen for the walls – this works beautifully not only in terms of creating a healthier building but the process of manufacture of the mud bricks involved the users of the building as well, thus giving a sense of belonging with the structure as well. 431

SWAPNIL SANJAY GAWANDE STUDIO DRAAFT FOAID 2020

Project Name The design strategy bases itself on the emergence of form and aesthetic from structure and function, which eventually enhances the performance of a public structure like Toll Plaza. Toll Plaza for Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) The Building was designed with an innovative structural approach wherein the entire ‘Canopy’was conceived as one big ‘Shell’ which was primarily disseminated into three Location components viz., one central core functioning as the main administrative building and two large ‘wings’ on either side covering the toll booths and lanes. Haryana The façade of the elliptical-conic central core is predominantly a variably-triangulated exo- skeleton that takes the entire load of the main building and allows the complete structure to stand just on four main columns. The curvaceous wings are subdivided into variable hyperbolic- paraboloids components which assure ease in load transfers. The structure stands 47 meters tall and 115 meters wide. This iconic structure manifests the newly acquired zeal, aggression and dynamism of our contemporary Indian society. Metaphorically, it could be compared to a Falcon – standing calm and confident, in its full glory, with head up high and wings wide open, ready to embrace the new challenges and opportunities of emerging India. 437

SWATHI KUNIMBEDU VIGNESWAR ARCHITECTURE PLUS VALUE FOAID 2020

Project Name REC Tech-Park is a Computer Science Training and Incubation Centre with Built-up area of 40,000sq-ft. The project site was located inside the REC campus and had an express time-line REC Tech-Park of 180 days with a tight budget. Location The main aim of the Design was to provide great spaces for the student community to train, socialise and start-up during their formative years. The spaces were designed in such a manner Chennai that the learning could continue out of the class-rooms and extend into the non-program spaces. This is where chance encounters between students and faculty leads to innovative ideas and can lead to start-ups in the future. The Spaces were designed to be naturally lit and ventilated. Day-lighting and colour palette inside the atrium and classrooms were planned meticulously to give a playful atmosphere for the Atrium and glare-free day-lighting for the Classrooms. An efficient Space-planning based on astute Structural planning with Steel-Framed Construction was adopted to meet the time-frame. The project is a grand success with the Students thoroughly enjoying the spaces and the centre serves a Hub for Innovation and young start-ups. 444
